Mask Painting from Colombo

For centuries, brightly painted wooden masks have been an integral part of Sri Lankan culture and are always a familiar sight throughout the island. Mask carving and painting is a traditional craft industry that has been serving as a means of livelihood for a number of families throughout the years. The artisans who conduct the workshop of mask painting will enlighten you about the deep connections of wooden masks with Sri Lanka's ancient history and folklore.

The art of making these wooden masks is a complex process that involves hard work and skill combined. Participants will be given pre made masks that have been carved using an assortment of chisels and a hammer. These masks usually represent characters such as Gods, Demons and Animals symbolizing protection and guidance. The painting process is always an engaging activity that can be enjoyed by the entire family rounding out a perfect cultural immersion that will leave lasting memories.

The environment of the workshop will be calm and inviting while they will be equipped with the paints, brushes etc that are required for you to finish off the project. A hands on project that offers you the space and time to interact with other guests from diverse backgrounds and listen to interesting narrations would be an added advantage. Personal story telling and self expression will also be a reflective exercise in the program. You will be duly enlightened about the cultural and symbolic importance of masks in Sri Lanka as well.

Note: Paints are all water based non toxic acrylic paint which ensures a safe experience. All material used here are child-friendly and suitable for participants from age 10 onwards
