Located in between Ella and Wellawaya along the Thanamanwila Road, Buduruwagala is an ancient Buddhist Temple in Sri Lanka.The complex consists of seven statues that are carved on to a large rock edifice while there is also a massive Buddha statue towering over fifty feet. The name Buduruwagala means ʺthe rock with Buddhist Sculpturesʺ while this is also known to be the largest standing Buddha statue of the island. It is also believed that the rock itself is the shape of a kneeling elephant with its head bent down.

The carvings at Buduruwagala are of the Mahayana Buddhist style while some statues may have been dated to the late Anuradhapura period.
